The 2004 MCAS Yuma Air Show

February 21, 2004

I proudly present to you The Worst Photo Of The Blue Angels Anywhere On The Internet. During the winter the Blue Angels base out of El Centro, California. On my drive from San Diego to the Yuma air show I saw them practicing way off in the distance. The picture stinks because I was travelling at Mach 0.10 at FL0 on the I-8, and didn't dare look through the camera viewfinder while driving.

It took me over and hour to go the couple of miles from the freeway to the base, traffic was just terrible. They seemed to be doing a good job of directing traffic, there just weren't enough lanes into the parking lot. I also forgot that Arizona is in a different timezone in the winter, so that and the traffic meant that I didn't get to the flightline until about noon. Just in time to see the morning acts leave!

Next up was a rescue demonstration. They tossed out a dummy and then went down to retreive it.

The airshow announcer pointed out a circular halo around the Sun, caused by ice crystals.

Jon Melby in his Pitts S-2B.

A quartet of Boeing E75 Stearmans. Interestingly, the FAA registration records for one of the planes indicates the plane is restricted to cropdusting! Buy Print

Tim Weber and Greg Poe took off simultaneously for some tag-team aerobatics.

The grand finalle of the show was a demonstration of the AV-8B Harrier, a local favorite.

It took off at a 45 degree angle, using only a few dozen feet of runway.

Standing on tiptoe, it pirouetted and settled to a soft landing. Buy Print

It then took off straight up. Buy Print

Apparently the left half of this EA-6B belongs to the Navy...

...and the right half to the Marines!

This F-16 looks happy from the front...

...and mean from the side!
